This week, my fellow classmates and I were tasked with testing AI text generators. The one I chose is one of the more popular ones: ChatGPT. And, here is the Google Doc with the original response and my revision of it.
We were to choose a topic we know a lot about, enter a prompt for our chosen generator, and fact check the information it came up with.
A topic that I’ve been following for almost my entire life, is WWE. More specifically women’s wrestling. I have watched the evolution of women’s wrestling with my own eyes for around fifteen years. I watched through the lowest of lows, the highest of highs, and even the stagnant times. It’s been a rollercoaster of an evolution, and I wanted to see how well ChatGPT would describe it. The prompt I entered asked the generator to talk about the different eras of the women’s evolution, as well as the prominent stars of each era.
Here’s how it went:
I asked ChatGPT to put its response in 250 words, and the response was about twenty words short. This confused me as I felt the response was mostly vague and left out many key details. There were also some errors in the dates, but my biggest concern was the lack of context in each section.
One section that I found myself editing the most was the “Attitude Era”. ChatGPT’s response left out major pieces of the story in my opinion. For example, I don’t think you can talk about the women’s division during that era without mentioning how provocative it was, and there was no mention of this at all. That era, along with the lulls of the “Divas Era” was the catalyst to the biggest evolution in women’s wrestling history: The Women’s Revolution.
If I was someone who didn’t know much about WWE, and went to ChatGPT to explore more, based off the initial response that I received, I wouldn’t truly understand the impact of each era properly.
What did I learn?
Overall, I learned that while it may seem like AI text generators have all of the answers, they oftentimes don’t have the correct information. I don’t have 100% trust in this software, because there’s no way to know how accurate the responses are without doing deep research yourself. And, that’s what’s most important when it comes to media literacy. Knowing the difference between truth and fact, and how to find that out.
